Welcome to Reception
The main topic this term is ourselves, autumn and celebrations.
Whilst getting to know each other better, we will be learning about our:
- Likes and dislikes
- Similarities and differences
- Our families and communities
The children will be developing their speaking and listening skills. Every Monday we share what we have done on the weekend and discuss how to turn this in to a sentence.
The children are developing their physical skills through daily outdoor play as well as weekly PE sessions led by our sports coach. Reception’s P.E. day is Friday. Children need to have a full school P.E. kit, which includes navy blue shorts, plain white t-shirt and black plimsolls. All clothes and kits need to be fully labelled with your child’s name. Please encourage your child to dress/undress independently.
In maths we will be learning about patterns and shapes, space and measure, as well as working on basic counting and number skills, one more and simple addition.
In literacy we will be starting the Read Write Inc. phonics programme where children will be learning their letter sounds. They will learn new sounds each week and will be expected to practise these at home. When they are ready they will begin to blend the sounds together to read and write simple words. We will also be sharing a range of familiar stories with them, which will form the starting point for further activities. We will be attempting different forms of writing activities such as lists/labels and making sentences.
Children also have a specialist teacher for music once a week. We also have a weekly Italian lesson.
Your child will begin to bring books home. It is important for them to enjoy reading every day. To begin with these will be picture books from the classroom until they are ready to move on to books with words. After you have read with your child, please remember to fill in your child’s Reading Record book.
Children are given sounds charts and keyword packs to practise at home. Children are given sound charts and keyword packs to practise at home. Children will also have a weekly 'Learning Journey' book. This book will contain a piece of literacy or numeracy work which will consolidate work from the week in school.
The children visit the library every Tuesday. Please ensure that their book is in their book bag ready to change.
Parent Volunteers for Reading
We would greatly appreciate any parents who would be kind enough to volunteer to read or do craft activities with our children in our classes. Please come and talk to Miss Crook or Miss Piacqudio if you are interested in doing this.
Please make sure your child attends school every day and arrives on time. For children to achieve their full potential it is vital they have high attendance.
The transition to Reception is big change for the children, but they soon get used to the new routines and expectations. If you have any concerns that you would like to discuss, please feel free to arrange a time to meet with us. The morning is always a very busy time but we stay late after school so are happy to discuss things with you then.
We encourage English speaking in class but do understand that children will communicate in their native language. Please support us by speaking English at home.
With kind regards
The Reception Team
There are "Stay & Learn" sessions for parents to view their child's learning. Dates will be sent home throughout the year.
